Sometimes when your helper has been with you for a while, she can lose motivation and start to coast in her job. How can you overcome this natural phenomenon and help motivate her to do well?

Incentive based awards
You can sometimes encourage motivation through financial incentives. You may, for example, offer her an incentive-based award. Some employers will do this monthly, some quarterly, and some annually. The role of an incentive is to drive a specific outcome and leverage human behavior. Rewards increase intrinsic motivation by linking an activity with a goal, motivating your employee to complete a certain task.
However, to be effective, your incentive-based reward should be tied to the following:
Specific job performance. For example, if things are being broken because of neglectful behavior, you might give her an extra $25 or $50 each month when no major breakage occurs. If you find she is no longer getting up on time, doesn't have dinner ready on time, or is skipping duties, you could tie the reward to completing these tasks consistently and repeatedly.
Something you are willing to check and keep records about. If you are going to judge her on whether dinner was on time, keep a calendar and mark it down when it was done properly.
Don't pit employees against each other - if you have more than one helper, your performance goals should not force them to compete, try to sabotage, or start tattling on each other.
They should be balanced. They should neither be too easy to achieve, nor too difficult.

Education awards
Sometimes employees may be motivated to stay long term and do a good job by providing additional opportunities to learn outside the job. Here are some ideas to help motivate your employee through education:
Work related education course, such as cooking, first aid, caregiving, or hospitality courses can be motivating for some.
Paying for school fees for her children would motivate those who are footing the bill for education back home.
Online degrees and certificate courses might also be an attractive option for some.
Fun gifts
You may also be able to motivate your employee with fun gifts and incentives. Here are some examples of fun gifts that your employee may appreciate. You can use these types of gifts when they do something especially nice for you, such as working late to handle a party you hosted, or working on their off day to help you when your spouse is away.
Movie voucher for 2 that they can use to take a friend to the movies on their day off.
Restaurant vouchers to cover a meal for themselves and a friend.
Gift vouchers from popular stores like Sephora or Typo so they can get something special for themselves.

Extra time off rewards
Another way to motivate employees is to offer them extra time off to compensate for good performance. Here are some ideas for extra time off rewards.
If she worked late for a party, offer her a late start the next morning. For example if she helped clean up after guests until 1 am, maybe she should get to sleep in and start at noon the next day.
If you know she has a special event coming up that is on a regular work day, such as a party at church on a Saturday, offer to let her have that time off if she completes certain tasks on time that week.
If you would like her to help you on a Sunday that she is off, offer to compensate her with the following Saturday off so she has two days in a row to rest that week.
As you can see, incentives don't have to be costly and they can be hugely motivating for employees. Consider these suggestions the next time you find yourself wanting to improve things at home.
